Cottonwood Technology Fund is an early-stage deep tech venture capital firm founded in 2010 by David Blivin, with offices in Denver, Santa Fe, Amsterdam, and Enschede. It backs patent-based, IP-driven hard science startups across photonics/optics, quantum, micro- and nanoelectronics, advanced materials, nanotechnology, sensor technology, health sciences, climatetech/energy transition, and advanced manufacturing and robotics; it explicitly does not invest in consumer products, software, AI, platforms, apps, crypto, or pharma/drug development. Geographically it concentrates on the Southwest USA (NM, AZ, UT, CO, TX) and Northwest Europe (mainly the Netherlands and Germany). At the (pre-)seed and early stage, it writes average checks of €1–3M, with follow-on participation alongside partners and other investors; at growth stage it invests roughly €5–25M in Series B/C rounds. Its latest vehicle, Fund IV, targets $80 million, the same size as Fund III, and announced a €25M first close on March 5, 2025, with a final close planned for March 2026. Founders submit pitch decks via the firm's online form.
