Support: Structured customer discovery curriculum, required industry mentor, National Innovation Network of regional hubs

A seven-week National Science Foundation cohort program that trains academic research teams to test whether a technology has commercial potential, requiring at least 100 customer discovery interviews with prospective customers, partners and ecosystem players. Accepted teams receive up to $50,000 for stipends and customer discovery expenses, part of which covers a participation fee paid to the training manager. Teams are three to five people comprising a technical lead, an entrepreneurial lead and an independent industry mentor, and must apply through a US institution of higher education. Applicants need an active NSF research award from the last five years, or completion of a regional I-Corps program plus a recommendation.
