The Department of Energy SBIR/STTR program funds small businesses performing R&D in clean energy, renewable energy, grid modernization, advanced materials, nuclear security, and energy storage technologies. Phase I awards up to $200,000 over nine months for feasibility exploration, and Phase II provides up to $1.1M over two years for expanded R&D. DOE offers more than 60 technical topics across energy production, energy use, fundamental energy sciences, environmental management, and defense nonproliferation. The DOE issues four Funding Opportunity Announcements per year, and only Phase I awardees may apply for Phase II.
