The Maryland Innovation Initiative, run by TEDCO, provides state-funded translational grants that carry university research through technology validation, market assessment and spin-out formation, a common commercialization path for materials, hard tech and bio hardware coming out of Maryland labs. Phase 1 Technology Assessment awards up to $130,000 for a sole applicant or $180,000 for a joint application over a nine-month term, and is open to full-time faculty at Johns Hopkins, Morgan State, UMB, UMBC and UMCP. Phase 2 Company Formation awards up to $300,000 over nine months to Maryland-based startups that licensed qualifying university technology within the previous twelve months, for a maximum of $430,000 across both phases. Applications run on a quarterly cycle, due by 5:00pm on the fifteenth day of January, April, July and October.
