NIH SBIR/STTR Program

The NIH SBIR/STTR program is the nation's largest source of small business life science funding, providing over $1.2 billion annually in non-dilutive grants for biomedical and healthcare innovation. Phase I budgets of up to $314,363 fund 6 months to 2 years of feasibility research, and Phase II budgets of up to approximately $2.1M support 1-3 years of continued development. Eligible applicants must be U.S. for-profit small businesses with 500 or fewer employees; STTR applicants must partner with a nonprofit research institution performing at least 30% of the work. Focus areas span research tools, diagnostics, digital health, drugs, and medical devices, with applications accepted through three annual submission cycles.
